Recently lose your job? You may have a few different options for health care coverage.

Know your rights & options

  • You may be able to sign up for COBRA continuation coverage. To learn more about your rights and options under COBRA visit http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/publications/ cobraemployee.html
  • You may be eligible for the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) if you meet certain income requirements. If you qualify, you can drop your COBRA coverage early. You can apply at any time at www.OregonHealthcare.gov or call 1-800-699-9075.
  • You can shop for health insurance at HealthCare.gov. Plans through HealthCare. gov may be less expensive than COBRA insurance. And HealthCare.gov is the only place where you can get help paying for premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Act now; you have sixty days after you lose your job to apply.

Can you change from COBRA to a HealthCare.gov plan?

During Open Enrollment

  • If your COBRA is running out/ending:
    • Yes, you can change plans
  • If you are ending COBRA Early:
    • Yes, you can change plans

Outside of Open Enrollment

  • If your COBRA is running out/ending:
  • If you are ending COBRA Early:
    • No, you can’t change until the next Open Enrollment Period, your COBRA runs out, or you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period another way

Note: If you cancel COBRA before it ends you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. You also don’t qualify if you lose coverage because you don’t pay your premium.
